REPORTS from the anti-graft agencies
probing the activities of the previous government have indicated that one of
former President Goodluck Jonathan's security aides has been asked to refund a
sum of N1.5bn (£4.8m) he illegally acquired while in office.
Although details have not been
revealed, the aide has apparently already been interrogated by security agents.
In the report on the matter, it was said that President Muhammadu Buhari’s
anti-corruption crusade has started yielding results with the recovery of
billions of naira from some officials who served in the immediate past
administration.
One presidency source added:
“The security agency has recovered N1.5bn from an aide of former
President Goodluck Jonathan. After a series of investigations, the money was
traced to his account, which he could not explain the source as a public
servant.
“The aide is not alone as some
others have voluntarily returned money to the federal government to avoid
prosecution. Already, the federal government has concluded arrangements to
create an escrow account for the lodgement of the recovered funds. "
Over the last few months, President
Buhari had sought the assistance of foreign partners and institutions to help
Nigeria in the recovery of over $150bn stolen funds stashed in foreign banks. Apparently,
the government has traced $1bn to a single bank account in one Western country.
MEN
of the Delta State Police Command have begun investigating the death of
a Sapele doctor Afoke Akporaivi who was killed in a local hotel while
fighting a rival man for snatching his girlfriend.
Eyewitnesses say the doctor was killed in a fight that ensued after he followed his girlfriend to the hotel where she was meeting her lover. According to reports, the doctor, who is married with two wives and kids was hacked to death at the Richard Continental Hotel on Ireto Road in Sapele.
Relatively well known in Sapele, Afoke was reportedly the owner of the Salvation Clinic located on Ogaga Road in the city. Dr Akporaivi's first wife who he had married for 10 years did not produce any child for him, which prompted him to take a second wife who bore him two children.
Apparently, during the fight, the doctor was pushed to the ground and subsequently suffered a heart attack as he had been suffering from high blood pressure. It is not yet clear if any arrests have been made yet as the police have yet to reveal the identity of his killer.
